Daedelus - Experience + Madvillain - Accordian
In 2001 Daedelus, who looks more like that Phantom Of The Opera of 70’s porn than an electronic artist, introduced himself to a public that was intelligent enough to see him as something extraordinarily sincere and special. Just one year later, Alfred Darlington hopped onboard LA-based label Plug Research to release Invention, an experimental album, making sense of the otherwise awkwardly matched up vintage samples and analog electronics. The result was a spark that ignited a cult following of music nerds. It is only right to point out that Daedelus is just as well respected as he is talented. Invention’s 8th track was a song titled ‘Experience’. Fast forward to 2006 when Madlib and MF Doom joined forces to create the underground hip-hop super (evil) duo Madvillain, releasing their somewhat self-titled debut Madvillainy. Beyond the album’s 1920’s radio drama style intro laid a beast of song called ‘Accordian’, which sampled Daedelus’ ‘Experience’. The homage wasn’t too random, even placing Alfred in the background of ‘Accordian’s music video.
Here’s a recent interview with Daedelus via XLR8R TV where alfred talks about his disillusionment with jazz, nerd electronics, and the philosophy behind his improvisational performances.
