The Incredible Hulk Is Not A Sequel
May 30, 2008
Okay, I was starting to think that I might be going insane, or just plain ol’ making shit up again. So, there is another Hulk movie coming out on June 13th, yet it has no relation at all to the Hulk film released in 2003, which sucked just as bad as I’m sure this one will. I have no clue how the fact that this film had already been made got passed the thousands of educated people it requires to create and distribute a movie, but I’m pretty sure that everyone (like myself) has been wandering around, bumping into shit, totally off-kilter, fighting away a disturbing sense of deja vu, thinking that they might just be going mad, but being too embarrassed to say aloud, “didn’t this already happen?”. I’m almost positive that half way through production someone must’ve turned to the director, holding up a dvd cover, asking, “should we just keep going?”. Not to mention the fact that The Incredible Hulk is just sorta gay–definitely not worth of back-to-back remakes. And even in the last one, did they ever explain how his shorts grow and shrink with his body? What are we supposed to be feeling as we watch a Hulk movie anyway? What am I supposed to be shouting at the screen, “yea! This guy can’t control his emotions! I’m SO into this!”. It’s just not as masculine as his veiny, roided chest would lead us to believe. I’m almost tired of this comic book movie genre anyway. At least the Marvel ones. Unfortunately the Spawn movie sucked so hard that Image Comics most likely burnt all their bridges to Hollywood. Otherwise I know that I wouldn’t be the only one eagerly anticipating a Gen¹³ movie. I was into Youngblood too, but I think all their costumes would just come across as being uber flamboyant on screen. Jim Lee was always a fan of that open-topped face mask kind of getup.
I guess the thing that triggered this post for me was that throughout the interwebbing blogs, there are “herds of nerds” that are literally FREAKING OUT because commoners such ourselves are making the misconception of this Hulk release being a possible sequel to the ‘03 film, when in reality, it’s just a very untimely waste of millions of dollars. So, our bad! I’m not joking. People are honest-to-god getting vicious about it. So, there it is–just to clarify, since before doing some minor research I seriously didn’t know if I was losing marbles. Geek on, brethren!
I’m going to let Best Week Ever wrap it up from here.
“Ok boys, “The Hulk” stumbled out of the gate, but we’ve got five years to completely reinvent the franchise, so let’s cast a new lead actor, think of a screenplay, write it, and come up with a concept for how we want to shoot the film that makes everyone forget about all that ridiculous Ang Lee crap in the first one.
[FIVE YEARS PASS]
All right, we’ve got Edward Norton starring and contributing his own script, we’ve got Tim Roth and William Hurt co-starring, and we’ve got the dude from “Transporter 2″ directing, which isn’t ideal, but at least he’s done action and he’ll be eager to take a crack at a more mainstream big-budget flick. I believe we’ve tied up all the loose ends.
OH MY GOD, WE FORGOT TO MAKE THE HULK NOT LOOK LIKE A TOTAL PIECE OF SH*T!!!! Awwwwww maaahhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!”
KC Flightt - Cabana
May 29, 2008
Gina is going to be SOOOO PISSED I’m blowing up our spot on this impeccable piano jam. I had been unable to find a good mp3 of it, having been spoiled by the sweet House Classics section at Turntable Lab, however yesterday it appeared magically on one of the torrents, along with the A-side of the record KC Flight’s ‘Voices’.
Highlights of this track include:
-The fact that it is 8 minutes long and has several distinct phases, an evolution of sunshine and joy emerging from Mr. Flight’s prolific house vision.
-The vocals are in there, but they’re mostly like ‘yaahaaahwwa heh heh! gaaooja baaah!’
Why am I still typing? Download this shit so you know what I’m talking about.
Ra Ra Riot Signs To Barsuk Records
May 27, 2008
For as long as I can remember turning over my favorite albums covers to lurk on all the label info printed on the back, Barsuk Records has been an ominous force in the delivery of amazing music. The most recent weapon in Barsuk’s arsenal of indie muzique missles are a band that goes by the name Ra Ra Riot from NYC. You can peep their official site HERE, which is just as whimsical and quaint as you would imagine from a tightly strung together art-rock indie band. RRR’s music is pretty with a (dull) edge. You’ll find cello (omg how art/indie is that?!) & flute-esque chorus riffs over the quick tapping of Cameron Wisch–resident beat constructioneer. Okay, let’s be honest… Sometimes this shit can just be “too” happy for me. I suppose the aged voice of lead vocalist Wesley Miles is the band’s only salvation from the gag me with a spoon chipperness that is oh so apparent in much of the group’s music. The band is relatively new, having formed in early 2006, so kudos to any group of worthy assholes that lands a spot on a label of indie goddom such as the Seattle based record makers in question. One of the bandmates really needs to go through some horrifically bad drug problems. That should serrate the band’s otherwise butter knife edges. Peddle through all the links above and check it all out.
Herve - Deep House
May 27, 2008
This track makes me feel EXCELLENT. In the same direction Surkin went with ‘White Knight’ (CHICAGO/O.G.!), Herve drops ‘Deep House’ in a manner that is anything but, and manages to pull it off gracefully. Gotta love them old school piano-o-o-o-o breakdowns combined with typical dubsided “suck n’ duck” fidget rumble. Really sorry this version is shitty at 160 (& out of no where volume fades out at 2:59), but you guys get the point. I think this jawn might mean summer’s here. Tops off, hands up.
M1 - Electronic Funk (Kaje Remix)
May 27, 2008
I hope you all know this original. If not, I suggest you become well acquainted with this 10 year old gem, remixed in what I believe was 2k1 (I am open to corrections… discreet ones) by Kaje–a british DJ/producer with almost too much soul for his own good. M1 is the code name for Canadian producer Matt DiMaria, who aside from making brilliantly smooth house classics, headed the record label Jinxx. Although this track did reach some mainstream success in the pre-interweb days of dance music, it would (without a doubt) have been much more widely known if it had been released in today’s world. It’s a smooth ride through simple piano chords and multiple vocoded snippets. Very early DPish.
David Guetta - Delerius (The Videoband! Remix)
May 20, 2008
In the continuous spirit of whoring other artists’ music, we’d like to give you a new remix by one of DBDF mega favs The Videoband!, who despite having produced plenty of quality music, have yet to grace the pages of this site. This most recent work is a take on a track by a man who needs to introduction, David Guetta. Clever vocal chopping and clunky LFO’d & sidechained basslines are the driving forces in the remix, as in all of TVB’s releases. I’m not sure if anything will ever beat the Sugababes remix done earlier this year, but this is sure to find steady rotation regardless. No wonder these dudes, who supposedly met at a party in Belgium, know how to stir crowds into a frenzy. Afterall, this trio hails from the Netherlands; the birthplace of ecstasy. So be sure to drink lots of fluids while downloading this song.
Sparrow Love Crew - Burgertime
May 20, 2008
I’d like to wager a decent amount of anything that it is next to impossible to not love a group as mercilessly entertaining as Sparrow Love Crew. Onto the group’s first hard release, Burgertime is the collected efforts of SLC’s past 2 years on the stage and in the studio. Those lucky enough to have known about these guys for the past few years have probably sinked their teeth into a few unofficial releases that have been circulating among friends & fans. But, this album is accomplishing two things–1) Giving the group’s almost religiously addicted fans a lost lusted over payoff of the tracks that weren’t even publicly downloadable until now, and 2) serving as an introduction to new fans and future followers of Sparrow’s uniquely amazing style of story telling and party hype. To say that these guys kill every stage they step on is an understatement. And although this album IS a lot of fun to listen to, it does not do their energy any bit of justice. If you like them on CD, you’ll love them on stage–It’s a rule of thumb that is almost always the opposite when comparing studio to live performances. Just look at Blink182. Burgertime is made up 7 tracks, all of which are suitable to bust your speakers at any given time. The jammiest of jams on the album a track called ‘Naidu’, which is about meeting an indian kid, named for the title, and taking him to a party. This insight was courtesy of rhyme sayer Mikey Brixx who manned the mic for the first verse on the track. I personally find automatic love for any hip-hop track with a flute that trills up and down a scale. With a deadly combination of electro influenced hip-hop instrumentals, catchy-as-fuck hooks, and squeaky clean scratches from the group’s DJ Opi Styles, the album proves to be infectious and entertaining. The beats are tightly compressed organizations of 80s-esque synth riffs worthy of an off-white Lamborghini cruisin’ down the coast at sunset or any Sega Genesis game having to do with Miami street crime. Cough cough Streets Of Rage cough cough. Technically, the only fault of the album as a whole is the mic quality. The vocals come off a bit flat & quiet. I’ve been assured that this is a characteristic only found on Sparrow’s older material due to the equipment available at the time. ‘Style Like This’ is the album’s fourth track, and undoubtely single-worthy. These neon-shoed orgy starters will be big, and you should get on board sooner rather than later.
You can peep and buy the album on iTunes HERE or mail order that beast HERE.
Cut Copy - Hearts On Fire (Aeroplane Remix) + More
May 20, 2008
Firstly, last night was a good night to be in LA. Modular’s star athletes Cut Copy graced the stage of the Echoplex for a live show with Los Angeles’ very own Classixx (who were performing their very first ever “LIVE” set). After the show, pretty much everyone was herded down the way to Modular’s official afterparty where the gang & I learned a few things. Mainly, Cut Copy draws a lot of roided-out bachlor party-esque dick shits at their shows. We’re talking about the button-up shirt guys who practically deafen you with their whistling and off-beat clapping whenever they recognize a song. These cock suckers were more annoying than a Furby with a dying battery. Secondly, the bartenders must’ve been roofie-ing every woman over 40 because I nearly got molested on 2 separate occasions while trying to dance and/or admire CC’s DJ style. And lastly, Cut Copy’s ability to DJ to a packed dance floor is very respectable when compared to other bands who have no business behind a set of turntables. The band’s rotating members played a collection of bouncy disco tracks, threaded in between various remixes of their own music. K.I.M. (of Presets fame) also took aim at the sea of hipsters and what our good pal and sarcasm master Carles of Hipster Runoff would legendarily refer to as “alt bros”.
On to the jamz! Here’s some remixes of ‘Hearts On Fire’. The blogosphere has already bit down heavily on the MJ mix, but chances are that most of you won’t already have this (disturbingly low 96k quality) Aeroplane edit, which was rocked out to last night. Both mixes take a completely different stab at the song, which only proves the original to be that much stronger of a track.
